One of my most favorite things, is coffee in bed. I don’t mean go make coffee and bring it back to bed. I mean wake up stretching to my husbands voice crooning, “I brought you coffee in bed.” Now this is the way to start my day! Unfortunately, it rarely happens. I am the early bird and he sleeps in another hour. I can’t wait and hour for my java.
One year when we were low on money and decided to give gifts from the heart for Christmas. I asked for coffee in bed once a week. He could choose the day. I am pretty low maintenance, as you can see. Imagine my surprise Christmas morning when he arrived at my pillow with a huge wrapped gift. He was beyond excited and almost ripped off the wrapping paper himself. I wasn’t quite awake yet and I mentioned that this would be a perfect time for a cup of coffee in bed. “This is even better,” he said grinning.
I stared at the gift. It was a 4-cup coffee maker. I looked at him confused. “Now you can have breakfast in bed every morning!” he said joyfully. “It’ll fit on your nightstand. You can set it up the night before and just push the button in the morning and there you have it! You won’t even have to wake me up. Now isn’t this the best gift ever?”
“What about the half and half?” It has to be refrigerated.
“It’s cold enough right now to just leave on the window sill with some ice and it’ll be fine.” He’d thought of everything…Except the part where I do nothing and he does it all.
And so that winter, I had coffee in bed every morning. I got used to climbing over him to get the half and half, stirring in my sugar packet and enjoying the silence of the morning. It really was a thoughtful gift.
Next year I am asking for a butler.
